Python Developer Needed at Tenreads

Tenreads , Chennai · tenreads.io · Full-time employment · Programming

Who are we?
We are Likewyss, an angel-backed startup based out of Chennai, building a product called Tenreads that helps people find the ten best stories everyday on the things they care about. We are a very small and nimble team trying to solve the problem of information overload and irrelevance that abounds the Internet. Our focus was on building a great web experience and we are inching closer to that everyday

Who are you?
You are someone who has worked with at least one web framework that the Python community has to offer (preferably not Django, but if you have fair experience with Django, it works well) and understands the HTTP standards. We are working with RESTful APIs for our webapp/mobile clients so this is fairly important.

Aside, you can work with noSQL without depending on ORMs, that is a major plus (Experience working with SQL would do too, but we are on MongoDB)

We have an inhouse Javascript expert who can fix things up at the drop of the feather, but if you have an inclination to picking up Javascript, or do not mind getting your hands dirty with doing some basic Javascript, extra brownie points. Essentially, if you are someone who is inclined towards getting out of their comfort zones and learn during the early phase of their career, we need to talk.

Culture Fit:

  • You've a professed love for well-conceived and elegantly designed (not just aesthetics) products
  • You understand the importance of weeding out crappy content from people's lives and web feeds
  • You obsess over simplicity and optimize for speed while keeping an eye on scalability.
  • You get super-excited about solving problems with technology but you understand that technology is a means to, but not an end goal of, a great product.
  • You read a lot on the Internet, and can talk at length about at least one thing apart from work you feel very strongly about -- this could be music, free software, design, etc. This is particularly important because if we find you boring, we will not work with you.

Interview Process:
The interview process is fairly straight forward -- there are no interviews, but we have a longer look-to-hire cycle than most because we focus on, and prefer, hiring the right person than firing the wrong person (later on).

  • Step 1: You like us; you send us credentials. [We would like to see code talk, so a link to your source repository makes sense] (Day 0)
  • Step 2: We like you; we say hi back. (Day 1)
  • Step 3: We get on a phone call to understand your technical skills better. (Day 2-3)
  • Step 4: If the phone call goes well, we send you a small project we want you to hack on. (Day 3-7)
  • Step 5: You send us the completed work, and we assess the quality of it; we get back to you. (Day 8-9)
  • Step 6: All goes well, and we invite you to work with us on a 7-day no commitment basis -- at the end of 7 days, if either of us feel it isn't working out, we pay you for the 7 days you have worked with us, and we end it there.

We know the last point is a lot to ask, but that is the only way to establish a culture fit. We look for this even in the earlier stages, but the foolproof way of knowing how someone is to work with, is to ... well, work with them for a while. Except in one case, we have never had someone who we thought wouldn't work out for us after the 7-day trial period. So don't worry -- if you make it till there, we probably like you a lot.

Job Perks

  • Awesome pay -- rare to hear that from a startup, but yes, awesome pay.
  • Performance based equity.
  • Free food -- breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Free passes to events/conferences you think you must represent the company at.
