Fullstack engineer for a seed-funded mobile commerce startup

Swym Corporation , Bangalore · swymcorp.com · Full-time employment · Programming

As you are well aware, shopping is increasingly becoming a mobile-first activity given that’s where most of us are spending a big part of our day. Unfortunately, retailers have not been able to keep up with the rapid consumer adoption curve for mobile, resulting in a less than ideal shopping experience for customers. At Swym, we are working to change this – we help e-commerce sites drive a more seamless, engaging experience for shoppers across devices/channels. We are a seed-funded startup establishing our engineering presence in Bangalore and in the process of building a very fun and differentiated organization that is focused on this huge opportunity. Our platform is in beta with a select set of customers and we are rolling out to a broader audience as we speak.

Our Culture

At our core, we are a bunch of engineers who have a profound respect for the creative process and the magic woven by amazing engineers. You are someone who is excited about the enormous potential in mobile e-commerce. You buy into the product we are selling; and you do sense that the experience of shopping on your device(s) is very ordinary, not as seamless as it should be. You see the opportunity there and you want to do something about it.

Requirements:

  1. Love programming: You get a kick out of having machines do your bidding and you are looking to improve your craft.
  2. Have Humility & Empathy: You do realize that programming is a personal craft and that it’s easy to step on ego’s when people put so much of themselves in their work. So you keep this in mind and try and play well with others.
  3. Contribute to Open Source: You have a Github/Bitbucket profile and have something we can talk about when we chat. If you don’t, don’t let that stop you from applying, as long as you have points #1 & #2 that’s great.

Nice to haves:

  1. Functional programming experience: You do think we are there. You do see the value of functional programming and get excited by code that expresses an idea clearly.
  2. Machine Learning/Statistics: Anything you can bring to the table in helping us build our personalization engine would be awesome. This could be R experience or maybe you have taken [Dr. Andrew Ng’s class from Stanford/Coursera]
  3. AWS/DevOps: Familiarity with Chef/Puppet/Vagrant/Terraform/<insert new hotness>.
  4. Profiling/Scaling: Have poked around with New Relic. Looked at query performance/optimization. Used Clustering/Sharding etc.
  5. An Eye for aesthetics: We are engineers with a deep love for aesthetics, so if you have something visually pleasing to show us from your past work, don’t be shy, we love that stuff!
  6. Prior startup experience: We believe that working in a startup teaches you a few special skills, and we are suckers for the spirit that goes with being part of a startup. If you’ve been part of one previously, we might be tempted to move you to the head of the queue.
  7. Android/iOS work: Maybe you’ve built a couple of apps on the Play/App store. That’s awesome - let’s talk!

Tools we use:

  1. Clojure
  2. Java
  3. Javascript
  4. Django
  5. Ruby-on-Rails
  6. Amazon Web Services - EC2, Redshift, DynamoDB, the works...
  7. PhP (just a little..)

Needless to say, we don’t limit ourselves to these - we are quick to adopt when the need arises and the returns are justified. Drop us a note if you think this sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you!
