When websites and web tools are properly designed and coded, people with disabilities can use them. However, currently, many sites and tools are developed with accessibility barriers that make them difficult or impossible for some people to use.

According to Census 2011, there are 2.68 crore people with disabilities in India, who constitute 2.21% of the total population. However, estimates vary across sources and in reality this figure could be much higher.

Making the web accessible benefits individuals, businesses, and society. International web standards define what is needed for accessibility.

We need a dedicated community of designers, developers, and other digital folks who can work towards making the web accessible for everyone. A11y India aims to support, nurture and build an active digital accessibility community in India. We could also organize events, webinars, and meetups accordingly.

As of now, the project (@A11YIndia) is curated by Mighil. Accessibility is not charity. It is a necessity. Let’s make web accessibility easier.
